lost In THe MAyes
The writer of Lost In the Mayes is from Camden, NJ. Quashon Mayes, more commonly known as Q, is a self published writer (author, poet, with ideas of play writing). With the help of the OutsideLookingOut team Q was able to write poems that he believes psychologically relate to the culture; real will recognize real.
What Is Lost In The Mayes?
Lost in the Mayes is a collection of poems written for no reason. Lost In The Mayes was written because Q loves to write. Realizing he could get paid for his words decision to share his works. Q feels the same way about his works as Ms. Badu feels about hers. His American Hero Complex made him feel that he was entitled share his words for those who hate to read (it is a simple read) or love to read(it gets deep). If you hate to read or love to read, Lost In The Mayes is the collection of poems is for you. Not so much for the kind hearted in betweeners, the "likers" as Q refers to them.
Growing up Q hated reading, feeling as though "if it was that important someone would just tell me." Thoughts of a smart kid in an unfair city. In the second grade Q wrote his first poem to the girl that sat across from him. Growing up fast he fell into the world and out of love with writing. Until adversity happened in his life. When he had no one to talk to, he wrote.
Initially his life was inspired by Shareta Mayes, his mother. The hardest working person he knew. After seeing his mother work hard to provide and do a great job of it his entire life he feel in love with hard work. Until he noticed hard work only leads to more hard work. Learning about the vicious cycle in sociology (at Albright College) he feel out of love with hard work. Opting to work smart. Learning that life, the human experience should NOT be hard. One must work smart, working smart keeps the mind active. An active mind is a happy one. Hard work leads to the body being more valued than the mind; which is backwards.
Lost in himself attempting to find himself.
In the mist of finding himself Q met Amadeus Hall (RIP) who took it upon himself to be a role model for anyone in his range of voice. Amadeus instructed Q to chase his dreams everyday but Q holds one memory close. On a ride home from Broadway's Gym (Downtown Camden) Amadeus told Q:
"I rap. Because I love to do it. I want to be the best rapper I can be because I love music aiming to be the best give me more time with my love. It's the worlds opinion of I am good or bad. I don't care much about that. They have to pay me to judge me. I am ok with that. I am also ok with doing it for free because I love it. All I know is I love it and I trust where my mind goes. If that's not enough for them, then they not fit me. They not for me, I will find whoever is. Feel me lil bruh?"
It took time for that to sink in. The wake up call came when Drake dropped "Views." It wasn't so much so that it was solely Drake, it was the timing of it all. Making everything appear Godly to Q. To Q, "Views" was his life relating every song to a very recent past event with honest memories. The idea to be a writer came to Q while listening to the third song on the album "U Wit Me." Drake said "I made a career off reminiscing." Quashon ran with that idea, he uses his past as the centerpiece of his pieces. Writing modern day courtly love poems, semi-epic poems (everything of an epic poems without the heroism theme) and a few other writing styles.
Giving insight to the mind of a guy who grew up too fast; Lost In The Mayes.
